Top drives are required due to the increased scope of drilling in areas of complex geology, directional and horizontal drilling. Moreover, the Rules of Safety in Oil and Gas Industry state that it is obligatory to use top drive systems whilst drilling deep wells, more than 4,500 m in depth, or wells with a horizontal section of more than 300m.
