The paper describes the background for the construction of the domestic multistart positive displacement motors (PDM), provides details of the R&D works to create and improve PDMs, including the phases of full-scale production of the motors and introduction to the oil and gas industry. Emphasis is put on the role of PDMs in the horizontal drilling and sidetracking. Present day designs of PDM and gerotor mechanisms and their potential future applications are shown. Results of license agreements are provided.<\/p>\n
