The paper focuses on methods of measuring mechanical properties of rocks: hardness, plasticity, specific fracture work, etc.
The basic mechanical properties of rocks may be taken into account to select drill bits and their cutting structure, as well as drilling techniques. However, the systematic lag in development of research methods, sampling problems, lengthy calculations and drill bit improvements do not allow to use them in a timely fashion.
