Key words: drilling riser, trials, load, design, section, connection, welded connection, material, corrosion, corrosion protection.
The paper’s focus is on an innovative solution aimed at improving the performance of an existing product through the replacement of material, namely, the replacement of steel with aluminum alloys. The replacement of material of a standard design riser provides an opportunity to operate existing drilling platforms in deep water areas and reduce drilling time. There are details of the method, rationale for design, choice of materials, semi-finished goods manufacturing, assembly techniques, testing programs and commissioning. It is shown that aluminum alloy is a better choice than other materials in terms of the price/strength/weight to use in the manufacturing of risers.
