Key words: Producing formations in West Siberia are heterogeneous. In the course of drilling of directional and horizontal wells there still remain areas of bypassed oil.
One of the solutions to increase production from such areas is the multilateral drilling technology. Downhole splitter is one of the multilateral well templates. All boreholes of such multilateral well are drilled into the same reservoir to ensure the maximum production efficiency. The most common difficulty which occurs in multilateral wells is drilling open hole sidetracks with an inclination angle close to 90 degrees.
The paper provides a review of a well drilling project in West Siberia where the operator used the multilateral drilling technology to reach the target reservoirs. The authors provide an analysis of results achieved and problems encountered whilst drilling each multilateral well.
The provided recommendations for the selection of an optimal BHA, bit and drilling parameters are based on the results of drilling of three multilateral wells.
