Key words: extended reach wells (ERD), analysis of risks associated with reduction of drilled section diameter from 17-1/2 to 16 inches, well path optimization whilst drilling thorough unstable shales, cleaning of highly deviated large size hole, control of equivalent circulating density, running and cementing 13-3/8″ casing into 16″ section.
The paper is focused on problems relating to optimization of extended reach well design in Lunskoye field offshore Sakhalin. Specifically, the paper considers all aspects of potential risks associated with the planning of borehole reduction from 17-1/2 inches to 16 inches in the interval of 1264-3806 m MD with inclination angle exceeding 80 degrees and provides actual results of drilling such borehole and running a 13-3/8″ casing string.
