Key words: shallow gas, field, high resolution seismic survey, risk of gas accumulations, decision matrix, well design, design documentation, engineering solutions, pilot wellbore (hole).
The paper concerns the issues of offshore well design and drilling, namely, the presence of shallow gas. To prevent accidental penetration of shallow gas accumulation areas, special attention is paid to the preparation for offshore well drilling. Engineering surveys will necessarily include high resolution seismic surveys of the upper part of the section in order to assess the risk of shallow gas occurrence. The paper provides a decision matrix for the selection of drilling locations in conditions of potential presence of shallow gas, wellhead design options for the various depths of potential shallow gas accumulations and well drilling solutions. Consideration is given to a possibility of drilling pilot wells in the centres of production drilling areas of offshore fields.
