Key words: shallow gas, geological section, shelf, gas pockets, gas pipe, anomaly, drilling, faults, hydrocarbon accumulation.

Shallow gas blowout during the drilling of offshore wells can cause to accident. The results of the research are demonstrate different origin of shallow gas in the upper part of geological section of Sakhalin shelf. Causes of shallow gas formation and the methods of detecting of it were defined. According to the results of geophysical and engineering-geological studies taking into account the degree of risk maps of gas accumulations in the upper part of the geological section are constructed. These maps lets increase the safety of drilling offshore wells. In case of high degree of risk necessary change location of drilling point.
