The paper focuses on development and application of inhibited drilling muds to drill through the complex shale formations of the Astrakhanskoye gas condensate field. The proposed new inhibitors include a wood chemical industry by-product, tall oil pitch, which is a chemical consisting of fatty acids and their derivatives. Attention is given to laboratory and field test results obtained whilst drilling of deep wells in the Astrakhanskoye gas condensate field. Examples illustrate the positive effect on the inhibited drilling mud on wellbore stability.
Key words: inhibitors, inhibited drilling muds, wellbore stability.
