An overview of the rock failure criteria, their advantages and disadvantages are presented. There is a summary table of the use of the criteria and links to articles with their more detailed description. The analysis of the rock failure criteria by the number of material constants included in them, as well as the possibility of their practical application in the process of drilling wells. Recommendations are given for the development of a service for operational geomechanical support of well construction, taking into account the growing capabilities of well drilling systems automation.
