The paper focuses on technologies of drilling for oil and gas in Russia and the former Soviet Union which laid the foundation for successful development of the country’s oil and gas industry. The paper is based on the key sections of the first chapter of the book «Advanced Drilling Solutions – Lessons from the FSU», published in the USA in 2003 translated into Russian. There are comments to the 2003 text regarding the future development of basic technologies and examples of implementation abroad. The paper shows that securing the experience of USSR is essential given the current problems in this sector of industry.
